Obituary

MERIDEN - Alvin J. Shelton, Sr., 79, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006 at MidState Medical Center. Born in Rockville, Virginia on Sept. 11, 1927, he was the son of the late George and Mozzelle Shelton. Before his retirement, he was employed for twenty-eight years at Pratt & Whitney in North Haven and was a driver for Rushford Center, Inc. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army after serving in the Korean War. He was a 40-year devoted and faithful member of Mt. Hebron Baptist Church and a member of NAACP Meriden-Wallingford Chapter. He is survived by five daughters, Ernestine (Ellis) Mason of Ruther Glen, VA, Roberta, Michelle (Dominic Reid) and Joely Shelton of Meriden and USAF Chief Master Sgt.Loretta Nadine Bryant of Washington, DC; a son, Alvin J. Shelton, Jr. of Meriden, two sisters, Patricia Riley of Cromwell and Alice Bernice Dericot of Middletown; a brother, George (Gerri) Shelton of Philadelphia, PA; fourteen grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Shelton was predeceased by two sisters, Pauline Mines and Pearl Fleming and two brothers, Thomas and Stanley Shelton. The funeral will be held Monday, Oct. 2, 2006 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Hebron Baptist Church. Relatives and friends may call at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow in the State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown, with military honors by the Antique Veterans of Meriden. Arrangements are under the direction of the Beecher and Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. Contributions in Mr. Shelton's memory may be made to Mt. Hebron Baptist Church, 84 Franklin St., Meriden, CT 06450.
