Hewitt, Jr.
March 3, 1944 – October 23, 2025
Amos Gallup Hewitt, Jr., of Hamden, beloved husband of Janis Lynch Hewitt for 61 years, passed away October 23, 2025 after a long illness. He was born in New Haven on March 3, 1944 to the late Amos G. and Dorothy Becker Hewitt and was a lifelong Hamden resident. He received his B.S. degree in Business Administration from Quinnipiac College in 1967, after which he began working for the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad as a locomotive engineer. Subsequently, he was also a locomotive engineer for the Penn Central, Conrail, and Metro-North railroads, retiring in 2004 after 37 years. He was a professional member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and the Association of Commuter Rail Employees. Trains were not just his vocation; they were a lifelong passion. Amos was also a longtime member of the Mount Carmel Congregational Church.
In addition to his wife, Amos is survived by his sons, Scott Hewitt of Burbank, CA and Peter Hewitt and his wife, Sara, of Holly Springs, NC; a sister, Judith Gray and her wife, Linda, of Ogunquit, ME; a sister-in-law, Kathryn Kandel of Albuquerque, NM; and several nieces. He was predeceased by sisters Elizabeth Crary and Grace Collis.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend a Memorial Service honoring Amos's life on Saturday, November 1 at 4:00 p.m. in the Mount Carmel Congregational Church, 3284 Whitney Ave., Hamden.
