Obituary

Betty Elaine Redway, 89, wife of the late Albert Redway, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2016. Born July 7, 1927 to the late Max and Margaret Opperman. Betty had been a loyal resident of Hamden for over 80 years, graduating from Hamden High Class of '44. Betty and Albert Redway were married in 1952, and celebrated 63 years together until his passing. Betty worked at the Loomis Temple of Music and the Yale University Co-Op in New Haven. For over 30 years, she worked for World Book Education Corporation. As a record-breaking saleswoman, Betty was never happier than when making knowledge accessible to everyone. She was involved with the Miss Connecticut Scholarship Pageant for over 40 years, presiding as a judge and assistant producer, among other roles. As a judge, she could be very demanding, but could also be easy on those needing their anxiety relieved. Always dedicated to her family, Betty, her husband Albert, and their two children traveled cross-country several times, visiting 48 states, Canada, and Mexico. Betty will be missed by her daughter, Diana Redway Donnelly (Charles); daughter-in-law, Cindy Watson; grandson, Justin; great-grandchildren, Aiden and Maxwell; as well as several nieces and nephews and many wonderful, loving friends. She was predeceased by her son, David Redway. Betty lived her life like a butterfly; beautifully, humbly, and free to explore. She truly loved life and brought joy to all who met her. Friends and relatives may visit with Betty's family from 9:00-10:00 AM Wednesday, September 14th at BEECHER & BENNETT FUNERAL HOME, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden. A Funeral Service celebrating her life will be held at 10:00 AM in the funeral home. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Miss Connecticut Scholarship Organization, 310 Jerome Ave., Bristol, CT 06010; checks payable to MCSO c/o Nakiya Troth.
