Brenda Alberta Virginia Griggs was born March 9, 1940, in East Lyme, Connecticut, to the late Dorothy Meggett. She was called home to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on July 5, 2026, surrounded by the love and prayers of her family.
Brenda lived a life rooted in faith, strength, compassion, and love.
Brenda met and married the love of her life, Joe Louis Spikes, on November 11, 1961. They were married for 62 years, built a beautiful life together, and were blessed with four children: Yvonne, Minnette, Joe Jr. (deceased), and Courtney.
Brenda dedicated her life to caring for others. She began her career as a cosmetologist, then served faithfully as a certified nursing aide for more than 30 years, offering comfort, kindness, and compassionate care to countless individuals. Her work reflected her heart - a heart committed to helping and serving others.
She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She enjoyed cooking, attending church, watching YouTube cooking videos, and shopping at the Dollar Tree and Walmart. Those who knew her will remember her for her kindness, quiet strength, honesty, and generosity.
Brenda was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joe Louis Spikes, and her son, Joe Spikes, Jr.
She leaves behind two sisters, Joyce (Mike) Bivans and Donna (Marvin) Cunningham Campbell; two daughters, Yvonne Taylor and Minnette (Sherman) Powell, to cherish her memory; and one son, Courtney Spikes. Her grandchildren include Jamie (Dorean) King, Jameel Spikes, Chad Spikes, Ninnette (Jermaine Johnson), Isabella Osborne, and Marley Spikes, along with eight great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
A funeral service celebrating Brenda’s life will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. in Beecher & Bennett-Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden. Friends may visit with her family from 10:00-11:00 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will be privately held at a later date.
