Obituary

MERIDEN - Burton L. Dingwell, Jr., 83, of Meriden, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004 at MidState Medical Center. He was the husband of the late Ruth E. Dingwell. Born in Meriden on June 18, 1920, he was the son of the late Burton L. and Hazel Buell Dingwell, Sr. He was a 1939 graduate of Meriden High School. Mr. Dingwell worked at New Departure and retired from the International Silver Company. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army Air Corps from Feb. 1942 until his discharge in Dec. 1945. He served in England, Normandy, France and the Rhineland in Germany. He was a supply sergeant with the 9th Air Force, 90th Supply Squadron, 322nd Bomb Group. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, American T Campaign Ribbon, European AFR MET Campaign Ribbon and the WW II Victory Medal. He was a member of the South Meriden Trinity United Methodist Church for over 50 years, serving on many committees. He was also a member of the Antique Veterans of Meriden. Mr. Dingwell is survived by his son Thomas M. Fitzgibbons III and his wife, Daryl; three granddaughters, Melissa and Erica Gregory and Meghen Fitzgibbons; his sister, Elaine Quinn and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Kristen Dingwell; his grandson, Thomas M. Fitzgibbons IV; two brothers, Russell Dingwell and Calvin Dingwell; and a sister, Barbara Dingwell. The funeral will be held Saturday, Jan. 24, at 10 a.m. at the South Meriden Trinity United Methodist Church, 145 Main St., South Meriden. The Rev. Susan DeSousa will officiate. Interment will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the Beecher and Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden on Friday, Jan. 23, from 4 to 8 p.m. If desired, contributions in Mr. Dingwell's memory may be made to the Memorial Fund at the South Meriden Trinity United Methodist Church, 145 Main St., South Meriden, CT 06451.
