Concetta Fusco Amatruda, a long- time resident of New Haven and Woodbridge, passed away at the age of 103, on March 29, 2013 of cancer. She was born in New Haven on May 14, 1909 of immigrant parents, Pascuale and Concetta Fusco of Vitulano, and was orphaned by the age of 2 years old. For many years she lived with the Sisters of Sacred Heart on Greene Street in Wooster Square. She was ever grateful for the many things she learned from the nuns and for the responsibilities they gave her even at an early age. Her life with the nuns had an indelible impact on her life as a Catholic and an independent and resourceful woman. She graduated from Hillhouse High School and, with a loan from Grace Hospital, received her RN from Grace Hospital in 1935. She loved nursing and was a Visiting nurse for several years before her marriage, in 1940, to Andrew A. Amatruda, her husband of 68 years. She returned to nursing in 1970 at Yale New Haven Hospital until her retirement. Connie was an active member of St. Aedan's Church in New Haven and the The Church of the Assumption in Woodbridge and contributed her time to several Catholic organizations including assisting with Pre-Cana courses. Having raised their children in Westville, Connie and her husband moved in 1981 from Westville to Woodbridge where she was the Municipal Agent for the senior citizens. In this role she taught handwork, found new homes for seniors and often helped them move, in addition to running the senior citizen's center for the town of Woodbridge. She and her husband moved to Litchfield in 2003. She is survived by her son, John M. Amatruda, M.D. of New York and Branford, CT, her daughter, Jean Flint Nelson of Litchfield, CT, four grandchildren, Vanessa Flint, Matthew Amatruda, Kristen Cowings, Andrew Flint and four great grandchildren. Relatives and Friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial Wednesday morning April 3 at 10:30 am in the Church of the Assumption, 75 Center Rd. Woodbridge with interment to follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Concetta's name to the Yale School of Nursing Annual Fund, P.O. Box 2038, New Haven, CT 06521. Arrangements in care of BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden.
