Obituary

Elizabeth (Betty) Hucke, 92, passed away peacefully on September 25, 2023 at Pond Ridge Assisted Living at Ashlar Village in Wallingford, CT.

Betty was born in Brooklyn, NY on November 9, 1930 to Elisabeth and Daniel McCarron. She married her life partner Roy on the cold and snowy February 13, 1955. They settled in Massapequa Park, NY, where Betty taught nursery school for many years, hosted family holiday gatherings, parties and played Canasta with The Motley Crew – her and Roy's lifelong group of friends that grew up on the same block in Ozone Park, Queens. Betty loved decorating her house, inside and out, for even the smallest holiday.

In 1986, Betty & Roy relocated to Orange, CT and made new memories and further lifelong friendships, complete with house decorating and numerous parties. She loved working in the garden and having annual disagreements with the deer who loved her salad bowl of plantings! She was active in the Orange Congregational Church and The Garden Club of Orange, traveled the world and enjoyed spending winters in Marco Island, FL.

In 2007 the All-American couple moved to Ashlar Village in Wallingford, CT, where Betty continued her love of hosting parties and attending social events. Her "Cluster" parties were legendary. She and Roy became famous at Ashlar as the "perfect" couple for photo shoots and television ads living the Ashlar mantra – #BeAgeless. She loved being able to lock her front door, go to Florida for months or take a European vacation, and have no worries. In her downtime she could be found at a slot machine at a casino.

Betty had a lifelong love of sewing including making her own and her daughter's wedding gowns, creating Barbie and American Girl doll clothes, Halloween costumes, and even upholstering furniture. Her active involvement in the Specialty Shop at Ashlar led her to sewing all kinds of unique items. If she wasn't at her sewing machine, she had a needle in her hand, creating beautiful embroidery pieces.

Betty's spirited personality helped her live life to the fullest every single day, often enjoying a good cup of coffee, or an Old Fashioned, or a glass of Chateau St. Michelle chardonnay.

Betty is survived by her loving husband Roy of 67 years, daughters Betty Jane Meier (Frank) and Katherine Wildman (Peter) along with two wonderful grandchildren, Katelyn and Christopher and additional family members and many friends. It was the memories she shared with these loved ones that led her to live by her mantra for the past several years, "We had a GOOD life."

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Ashlar Village on Sunday, October 15 th at 3 p.m. A reception will follow. To honor Betty's love of fashion, guests are encouraged to wear her favorite color, blue, or any other bright hue. Donations in Betty's name can be made to Masonic Charity Foundation of CT, P.O. Box 70, Wallingford, CT 06492.
