Evelyn (Ahrens) Mathewson of Hamden, Connecticut and Sun City West, Arizona, widow of the late David J. Mathewson passed away at home on Friday, January 9, 2009. Born February 29, 1920, Evelyn was the daughter of the late Mildred and Warren Ahrens. She lived in Hamden until her marriage to David Mathewson in 1942 at which time they moved to Orange, Connecticut. In 1943 they started the Mathewson Tool Company where Evelyn served as corporation Secretary and Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer until the business was sold in 1969. Mrs. Mathewson was a member of the New Haven Badminton Club and a volunteer at Goodwill Easter Seals for many years. Following the sale of their business, the Mathewsons played golf at New Haven Country Club, traveled extensively and spent much of their time at second homes in Quechee, Vermont and later Sun City West, Arizona. In Arizona, Mrs. Mathewson served as an animal rescue shelter volunteer and an English as a Second Language tutor for Hispanic children. Mrs. Mathewson was predeceased by her husband in 1997 and by her daughter Diane Wheaton in 2002. She is survived by her brother, Spencer Ahrens of Milford, Connecticut, son David (Kathryn) of Signal Mountain, Tennessee, grandchildren James (Carol), William and Lynley Wheaton of New York, and Heather (Bryan) Rainville and Carroll (Kenneth) Griffin of Pittsboro, North Carolina who all knew her lovingly as 'Mimi'. She was also 'Mimi' to her two great-grandchildren, Ahren Griffin and Katherine Evelyn Rainville. All are invited to attend a memorial service and celebration of her life on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at 10 AM in BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 Whitney Ave. Hamden The Rev. Kathryn Mathewson will officiate.
