Franklin I. Scharmer, a long-time resident of Meriden and more recently of Ashlar Village in Wallingford, passed away on December 30, 2017 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born on December 11, 1931, Franklin was the son of the late Frank and Idella Geisler Scharmer. After college and service in the US Army in Germany, Franklin was employed by the Hartford Insurance Company, where he served as a Senior Underwriter. Franklin was best defined by his interests, which went well beyond his successful business career. A devoted member of First Congregational Church in Meriden, he served for many years as Treasurer, was a member of the Bell Choir and engaged in numerous capacities which served the congregation where he was a lifelong member. In addition, Franklin served as a member of the Board of Directors of Walnut Grove Cemetery and found great comfort and pride in the beauty of that place. Franklin was an avid music lover and totally devoted to the music of the church, especially the organ. Over the years he became an expert, not only in his knowledge of organ repertoire, but in the building of organs as well. He was highly regarded by musicians and organ builders as well. He was frequently consulted on technical and design issues related to installation of the instrument he so admired. Franklin was an opera lover and could frequently be found at the MET on Saturday Matinees in Dress Circle, Box 11. Franklin is survived by his friends, Allan Nelson and Ellen Arendt of Cromwell, by members of the Pritchard family, and by several members of an extended family. He was predeceased by his sister, Liane Scharmer. Franklin was also predeceased by his very dear friend, Judith Anderson, earlier this year. A Funeral Service celebrating Franklin's life will be held on Saturday, January 6th, at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel at Walnut Grove Cemetery, with Pastor Bruce Miller officiating.
