Fred Joseph Anderson of Hamden, CT passed away peacefully on July 20, 2023 at age 90 after suffering from a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Noris, son, Martin, daughter, Andrea, sisters, Daphne and Etta (Belle), first wife, Barbara, six grandchildren and a great-granddaughter, nephews and nieces, and grandnephews and grandnieces. Fred was born in Jamaica, West Indies. He was the eighth of eleven children. He arrived in the United States in 1963. Before migrating to the US, he was an Elementary School Principal. He met his first wife Barbara in Jamaica, who came as a Peace Corp worker, with whom he had 3 children, including Trooper David Frederick Anderson, who died tragically in 2001. He spent 50 years working for the New Haven Public School system as a social worker for a number of schools, including East Rock School, tutoring and mentoring thousands of children during his career. He earned his Master's degrees in education and social work from Southern Connecticut State University. Fred was the proprietor of Fred Anderson Painting & Cleaning, where he painted homes, washed windows, cleaned condominiums and bank branch offices. He ran this business during off-school hours for more than three decades and was known for his meticulous detail, especially when it came to painting homes. Fred's first love of sports was cricket. He was a member of the New Haven Cricket Club and played well into his late 60's. He later became an avid golfer and an accomplished bowler, and there was not a sport that he did not like. Fred also loved to fish. Fred was a well-known storyteller who frequently drew crowds due to his larger-than-life laugh.

All may attend the Thanksgiving Service on August 19, 2023, 10:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 205 Edwards Street, New Haven. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the church Building Fund.
