Obituary

MERIDEN - Frederick Miles Carter, 94, retired Vice President of the Home Bank and Trust Company, died Monday morning, Jan. 8, 2007, at Meriden Center, after a short illness. Born in Orange, CT on Jan. 13, 1912, the son of the late Alfred G. and Christine M. Johnson Carter, he came to Meriden in 1922 following the death of his father, and resided here ever since. A graduate of Meriden High School, Class of 1929, Carter entered the employ of the Home National Bank and Trust Company in 1930 as a mail and proof clerk. Working through the ranks as transit clerk, collection and foreign exchange departments, bookkeeper, teller, general ledger bookkeeper and accountant, he was elected the bank's first Comptroller in 1955. The title of Assistant Vice President was added in 1965. When the bank converted to a state charter in 1973, Carter was elected Vice President and Treasurer, a post he retained until his retirement in 1974. He was a graduate of the American Institute of Banking and the N.A.B.A.C. School for Bank Auditors and Comptrollers at the University of Wisconsin. He was active in public education areas, having served as president of the Nathan Hale P.T.A., a member of the Citizens' Advisory Committee to Review the High School Curriculum. He also served as Chief Consul for the American Institute of Banking, and as president of the Hartford Conference of the National Association of Bank Auditors and Comptrollers. During World War II he was a First-Class Petty Officer in the United States Navy, serving as office manager of the Supply Division at the U.S. Naval Station in Oran, Algeria. He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church where he had served as senior warden, a member of its vestry, and for twenty-five years as treasurer of the Book of Remembrance. Since 1940 he had been a licensed lay reader in the Diocese of Connecticut, and since 1968 a Lay Eucharistic Minister. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Meriden Public Health and Visiting Nurse Association for ten years, including two years as its president. He is survived by his daughter, Mary C. Johnson of New York City; three sons, Stephen M. Carter of Windsor Locks, Michael F. Carter of Wynnewood, PA and Jonathan M. Carter of Durham; two stepdaughters, Priscilla S. Badgley of Winter Haven, FL and Doreen Standish of Bellingham, WA; two stepsons, Joseph Standish of Suwanee, GA and Gary Standish of Cheyenne, WY; and 26 grandchildren and great-grandchildren He was predeceased by his first wife, Barbara Wainright Carter in 1982, his second wife, Dorothy Standish Carter in 2003; a sister, Helen M. Dickinson in 1930; and a brother, G. Alden Carter in 2000. Funeral service Thursday, Jan. 11, at 12 noon at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 126 Hanover St., Meriden. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Beecher & Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave., Meriden.
