Gail Anne Mirza

It is with deep sadness and love that we announce the passing of Gail Anne Mirza of Hamden, Connecticut, on Saturday, July 11, 2026. She was 80 years old.

Born in 1945 on the shortest day of the year - December 20 - each birthday with Gail was an opportunity to celebrate Christmas and the coming light of a new spring.

Gail was raised in the suburbs of Chicago and quickly thereafter sought out farther-flung places and cultures. While obtaining her undergraduate degree from the University of Kansas, she spent a year studying Spanish in Spain during the Franco dictatorship. She served in the Peace Corps only a few years after it was established by John F. Kennedy and lived in rural Brazil. She went on to publish new English translations of several plays by Silveira Sampaio and other renowned Brazilian playwrights.

While completing her Ph.D in comparative literature at SUNY Binghamton, she spent two years in India. She studied Hatha Yoga and Ayurvedic health practices at the Pantanjali Yoga Research Institute and stayed with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi at his ashram in the Himalayan foothills of Rishikesh - where she was an early student of Transcendental Meditation. During her time in India, she married her former husband in a traditional Islamic wedding ceremony and lived with his family in Hyderabad, participating in their Shia practices and community activities. On their return to the United States, they built a life and family in Connecticut.

Gail was a dedicated and beloved Spanish language teacher, having taught hundreds of students at The Master's School in Simsbury, Cheshire Academy, The Foote School in New Haven and finishing her career at Fairfield University. In addition to Spanish and Portuguese, she spoke French, Italian, Hindi, and Urdu, and had a solid foundation in Latin and Sanskrit.

Yet only those who knew her well would know half of this. Gail was defined by her humility and was a pure soul who felt as much as she thought. Drawing from her family’s roots in the Swiss Colony of Appalachia, where her grandfather was an ordained minister and missionary to the region’s poorest, she practiced Christ’s teachings of love, compassion, humility, and justice in every thing she did.

In retirement, she enjoyed hiking East Rock, walking the El Camino, and camping at Sandy Hook with her partner. Together, they had numerous adventures in New England, Mexico, and at Foote’s sister school in Nicaragua. She also loved reading fiction and poetry, painting, art museums, cooking, and journaling. And there was always time for dancing, a spark she got from her mother that Gail gifted to her own daughter.

Known for their deep emotional empathy and mother-led societies, elephants were her favorite animal. Her favorite flower was the iris, especially Vincent Van Gogh’s.

Gail is predeceased by her father, Richard Belcher; her mother, Lucille Belcher; and her brother, Keith Belcher. She is survived by her children, Isa John Mirza, Tahira Ann Duro-Emanuel, and Ali David Mirza; her grandchildren, Yusuf Mirza, Layla Mirza, and Serena Duro-Emanuel; her step-grandchild, Braxton Hendrix-Emanuel; and her former husband, Humayun Ali Mirza. She also leaves with us her loving and ever-adoring partner of nearly twenty years, Chris McLaughlin.

Family and friends are invited to attend Gail’s funeral Mass at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 28th at Saints Cyril and Methodius Church, 79 Church Street, Bridgeport.
