Obituary

George DeForest Conquest, 84, husband of Wilhelmina Morgan Conquest of Marlen Dr., North Haven passed away Aug. 18, 2003 after a brief illness. He was born in New Haven a son of the late George P. and Cora Lee Branche Conquest and had lived in Hamden before moving to North Haven in 1970. He graduated from Hamden High School, Class of 1938 and served in the US Army during WW II as a 2nd Lieutenant with the 92nd Infantry Div. in Italy. He remained in the Army Reserves and was assigned the position of Adjutant General with the 76th Div. and retired from the Army Reserves in 1979 with the rank of Colonel. Mr. Conquest received a BS Degree in Mathematics, Master of Science from the University of Bridgeport and a Sixth Year Certificate in Administration from Southern Connecticut State University. He was a mathematics instructor in the Hamden Schools and then became Coordinator of the Talented and Gifted Program and Assistant Director of the Hamden-New Haven Cooperative Education Center. In 1977 he became Assistant Principal of Hamden High School from which he retired in 1981 after 31 years as an educator. He was a member of the Oriental Lodge # 6 R & AM of New Haven, Past Commander in Chief New Haven Consistory # 6 AASR, and elevated to the 32nd degree in 1976. He was the Illustrious Commander in Chief in 1980-81 and became Illustrious Treasurer in 1981. George was elevated to the 33rd degree in 1984. He was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Lions International, Life Member of the Reserve Officers Assoc., Retired Officers of the United States, Life Member of the Military Order of World Wars, a board member and secretary of the Cooperative Consumers of New Haven Inc., The Regional Visiting Nurse Assoc., and Vice President of the Board of the Regional Adult Day Care Center. Mr. Conquest was a member of the Dixwell Avenue Congregational United Church of Christ since 1958 and was Chairperson of the Finance Board, a member of the Usher's Board and the Men's Network. George was an avid bowler. In addition to his wife he is survived by many relatives and friends. He was predeceased by a sister, Geraldine Grace Conquest. Funeral service will be Saturday, August 23 at 9 a.m. at the Dixwell Avenue Congregational Church United Church of Christ. Friends may call Friday from 4-8 p.m. at BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden and Saturday morning from 8-9 a.m. at church. Masonic service Friday at 6:45 p.m. Interment with Military Honors in Beaverdale Memorial Park.
