Meriden - Howard (Shorty) Weyant, 82, passed away peacefully Monday morning, April 20, 2009 at MidState Medical Center following a brave battle against heart and kidney disease. He was born on Feb. 4, 1927 in Cromwell the son of the late Daniel and Alice (Walstead) Weyant. Howie moved to Meriden in 1941 living on the city's east side. He then served in the Army Infantry as a mechanic. He completed basic training at Fort Gordon , GA. and was dispatched to serve in Germany during World War II. He met his future wife Rhoda Birdsey at a neighborhood gathering place, New Dam. They married on May 31, 1947. Howie was a one of a kind, humorous man who worked as a truck driver his entire life until his retirement in 1992. He relayed many an 'on the road' story which left his listener with a smile or gasp on their face. He was employed by Boehle's Trucking Company, Cooper Jarret Trucking and retired from St. Johnsbury Trucking Company. Howie loved working on cars, especially his 1963 Corvette split window coupe. He enjoyed watching and attending Nascar races. Howie is survived by his wife Rhoda and his best friend and confidant, his son Todd. He also leaves a sister-in-law, Lois Somerset, a brother-in-law, Kenneth Birdsey and wife Jean of Wallingford, VT, several nieces and nephews who enjoyed spending holidays with 'Uncle Howie'. He will be missed by his two faithful 'Kitty buddies', Kyle and Rusty. He was predeceased by a sister, Josephine Beraducci. A heartfelt thanks goes out to his daily visitor and loyal friend, Scott Hubbard who was always there for the Weyants. The family would also like to than the staff and personnel of Wing 100 at the Meriden Center and MidState Medical Center for their care and compassion shown to Howard.
