Obituary

In Yale-New Haven Hospital, April 8, 2007, Jane Bein Hendon, 84, beloved wife for 60 years of Rufus S. Hendon, mother of Alison M. Hendon of Brooklyn, NY, and Julia A. Hendon of Orrtanna, PA. She was predeceased by two brothers Louis and Thomas Bein and two sisters Eleanor Bein and Elizabeth Bein Keto. Jane was born in Berthoud, CO, April 14, 1922, a daughter of the late Louis Ferdinand and Ellen Bunyan Bein. After graduating in 1943 from the University of Colorado Boulder she was accepted into the Training School for the Japanese language set up at the University by the Navy. Upon completing the course she was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve and assigned to duty in Naval Communications in Washington, DC, where she served for three years during World War II. After the war she accompanied her husband on anthropological field trips to Malaysia and Indonesia. She and her family settled in Hamden in 1964, when her husband was appointed to the Yale faculty. She served on the Hamden Library Committee from 1973 to 1980. Later she worked for many years as the Democratic Assistant Registrar of Voters in the Ninth District. Funeral arrangements are private and under the direction of BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden.
