Joan (Joann) Mariano Cappella, longtime resident of Hamden, CT passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 11, 2026 in her home surrounded by her loving family. While her health was compromised in her final years, she lived a full and joyful life and passed away at the remarkable age of 92 years old. So many people are left to mourn her passing including her loving husband of 64 years, William; her three sons William (William McCartin) of Nashua, NH, Robert (Martha) of Northford, CT and Paul (Maria) of North Haven, CT. Joan also leaves behind her seven beautiful grandchildren, Marissa, Alexa (Marshall), Paul, Ryan, Robert, Jason and Brendan; and her two great-grandsons Marshall and Nathan, all of whom reside in Connecticut. Joan is also survived by her sister Marie DiGuiseppe of New Haven, CT. She was predeceased by her parents William and Antoinette (Salzano) Mariano, as well as her brother Rocco Mariano.
Joan was born on March 21, 1934 and spent her early years living in the Annex section of New Haven. She graduated from Wilbur Cross High School in New Haven in 1952. She was an accomplished and gifted pianist, and her music instructor once encouraged her to enroll in the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. However, she chose a different path in life and went to work as a bank teller for the Tradesmen’s Bank and Trust Company for 14 years. In 1966 she left her position at the bank to start her family and begin her favorite job raising her three boys, the “three loves of her life” as she always referred to them. A Mother extraordinaire, she always provided a homemade meal which was waiting for you at the kitchen table, a shoulder to lean on, an ear to listen to and a heart of unconditional love. Her other interests included a passion for fine jewelry and apparel, a love for old movies and cinema and watching her favorite soap opera Days of our Lives, which she viewed daily at 1:00 p.m. sharp for many decades. She also enjoyed attending high school class reunions, summer evenings at the Oakdale Music Theater and shopping at her favorite stores in the Hamden Plaza.
Family and friends are invited to visit with Joan’s family from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday June 16, 2026 at Beecher & Bennett Funeral Home, 2300 Whitney Avenue, Hamden.
