L. Maxwell Sleeper, 100, of 200 Leeder Hill Dr., Hamden, husband of the late Elizabeth Bassett Sleeper and his second wife the late Louise MacLeod Shute Sleeper, passed away Aug. 21, 2003 after a brief illness. He was born in Sherman Mills, ME, a son of the late Walter and Margaret Harris Sleeper and had lived in Hamden for many years. Mr. Sleeper graduated from Clark University AB class of 1925 and received an MA degree in 1926 and continued his graduate studies at Purdue University. He was employed as an engineer at the Bristol Co. for over 32 years prior to his retirement in 1968. He served on the Board of Directors of the Hamden Historical Society for 10 years and the Mt. Carmel Public Library for 15 years and was a member of the Mount Carmel Congregational Church. He is survived by two sons; C. Freeman Sleeper and his wife, Mamie of Richmond, VA, David J. Sleeper and his wife, Beverly of Glastonbury, CT a stepdaughter, Sandra Hook of Bethany, CT, a sister, Ella Emery of Island Fall, ME, 8 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by 4 brothers and 3 sisters. A Service of Celebration and Remembrance of his life will be held in the Whitney Center 6th floor Common Room, Tues., Aug. 26 at 2 p.m. Arrangements in care of BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden.
