Lois Marie Flanigan Britney, 85, of 5 Lighthouse Lane, Eastham, MA died Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis, MA. For 61 years she was the wife of the late Howard R. Britney. Born in Meriden on November 27, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Charles W. Flanigan and Madeline Homan Flanigan. She was a graduate of Meriden High School and a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church. She worked at various jobs throughout her life, most notably as a switch board operator for the telephone company and as a school crossing guard and meter maid for the Meriden Police Department. She really loved driving that Cushman around town. We used to tell her she made the corners on 2 wheels. She loved the outdoors and one of her favorite vacation spots was Cape Cod. She and her husband kept a trailer on the Cape for many years, and oftentimes one could find the two of them in their waders, fishing for striped bass from the shore. Lois is survived by a son, Scott Britney, and 2 daughters, Lori Michalak and husband Danniel, and Leslie Riordan; 4 grandchildren, Ryan Riordan and wife, Amy, Jason Britney and wife, Heather, and Joshua and Mallorie Michalak; 4 great grandchildren, Jack and Allie Riordan, and Lucas and Logan Britney; brother, Nelson Flanigan and wife Mary, and sister, Dorothy Flanigan; sister-in-law, Florence Flanigan; as well as many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews; and importantly, 2 kitties she adored, named Sonny and Griz who brightened her every day. Lois is predeceased by a sister, Ruth Zawacki and a brother, Wesley Flanigan. Lois was a wonderful mother and wife who is already missed. She often said that living on the Cape, which she did for the last 1 ½ years of her life, was like being in heaven. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, January 21 at 11 am at Gethsemane Cemetery, Bee St., Meriden, CT. Arrangements are under the direction of Beecher and Bennett Flatow Funeral Home, 48 Cook Ave, Meriden.
