Marie C. Matthew, wife of 51 years to the late Joseph Aaron Matthew, Sr., passed away Thursday, December 22, 2022. She was born in Barre, VT April 2, 1930, the daughter of the late William and Jeanette Matthew, and resided in North Haven for over 50 years before moving to Cheshire. Marie lived the majority of her adult life in North Haven and raised her family there, attending countless school and sporting events in support of her five children. She was a life-long member of St. Rita Church in Hamden. She enjoyed antiquing, managing estate sales, and trips to Vermont where she spent her childhood. She was an accomplished cook; holidays and Christmas Eves were her specialty. Her biggest passion though, was her family, whom she loved dearly.
She is survived by, and is the beloved mother of, Stephen Matthew of Driehuis, Netherlands, Paula Matthew of Hamden, Janette Matthew of NJ, Joseph Matthew, Jr. of Cheshire, and Douglas Matthew of North Haven; sisters Ann Harris of Virginia and Jane Matthew Murphy of Texas; brothers James (Jimmy) Matthew of MA and Ronald Matthew of MA; nine grandchildren, Shawn, Jennifer, Marissa, Megan, Aaron, Maxine, Nick, Jace, and Elle; and nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brothers, William Matthew and Michael Matthew, and her sister, Dianne Matthew.
Friends are invited to visit with Marie's family from 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m. Thursday, December 29th at BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 Whitney Avenue, Hamden. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. in Divine Mercy Parish-St. Rita Church, 1620 Whitney Avenue, Hamden. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Marie's memory to the charity of one's choice.
