Martha McGaw Hirsch, "Marty," age 92, of Hamden, loving wife to Edward F. 'Fred' Hirsch, Jr., passed away on February 15, 2018. She was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey on October 6, 1925 to the late Wilton and Ruth Hood McGaw. Along with her husband Fred, she is survived by her loving children; Marthann Hirsch, Edward F. Hirsch III (Marilyn), and Jay M. Hirsch (Diane). She is also survived by her grandchildren Erich (Jamie), Sefton (Melissa), Charles (Tulika), Jenna and Jesse Hirsch, and one great-grandchild, Adaline Hirsch. She is predeceased by her sister Nancy Pohl. After graduating high school in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania (where she met Fred), she attended art school in NYC and held various jobs until she married in 1948. Fred's occupation as a sales professional in the steel industry had them moving often; and they eventually settled in Hamden, CT in 1957, where she raised their children. At age 50 she began taking classes at South Central Community College and later graduated with a B.S. degree in psychology from Quinnipiac College. She worked as a social worker and shortly thereafter established Nexus Center, a pre-retirement planning business. She traveled as far as Florida, having been hired by corporations to set up services to prepare professionals for their retirements. During this time she continued her education at Southern CT State College, where she received a Master's Degree in Gerontology. She began teaching as an adjunct at Quinnipiac and Gateway University, where she later became a full-time professor, and the Director of Human Services.
