Maureen O'Connor
Ambrogio
August 17, 1934 – October 8, 2024
Maureen O'Connor Ambrogio, 90, of Hamden, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2024 after a short illness. Maureen was married for 64 loving years to former Hamden Police Chief John P. "Jack" Ambrogio, who predeceased her.
Maureen was born on August 17, 1934 to the late Dennis O'Connor and Alice Ruwet O'Connor Russo. She grew up in New Haven and began her schooling at St. Francis Elementary School. She attended Sacred Heart Academy and graduated from Wilbur Cross High School in 1952. She went on to study nursing at St. Raphael's School of Nursing, becoming an RN in 1955. During her career she spent time as a hospital and ER nurse as well as a school nurse, but the position she enjoyed the most and where she had the greatest impact was at St. Francis Home for Children (Highland Heights) in New Haven. She spent more than 20 years there providing psychiatric nursing care for troubled youth.
Maureen loved reading, music, dance and travel. She enjoyed discussing politics and was liberal in her thinking. She was always up for a game of Scrabble or Trivial Pursuit. Her happiest times were those spent with her husband, children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and faithful dog Jazzy, often during summers at Cornfield Point, Martha's Vineyard, and Manasota Key, FL. Her home was always open to friends and relatives, and holidays and special occasions were joyous, exuberant celebrations.
Maureen was a devoted mother to Gayle Horan (Sean) of Englewood, FL, Jacquelyn Bouvier of Stow, MA, Pamela Doolan (Robert) of Newington, CT, and Valerie Kammerer (Eric) of Austin, TX. She was the proud and doting grandmother to Jonathan and Noelle Bouvier, Alexandra and Melissa Doolan, Veronica Ambrogio Romee and William Kammerer, and great-grandmother to Kisa and Dante Romee. Maureen also leaves her daughter-in-law, Sandra Baldo Ambrogio of Bokeelia, FL, sister and brother-in-law Denise and Nicholas Bauer of Hamden, brother-in-law Anthony "Pat" Ambrogio (Rose) of New Haven, and many cherished nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her husband John, Maureen was predeceased by her beloved son, John P. Ambrogio, Jr., her sister, Joan O'Connor and her son-in-law, Edouard Bouvier.
Funeral will leave from Beecher & Bennett Funeral Home, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden, on Tuesday, October 15th at 9:30 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, followed by her burial in St. Mary's Cemetery.
