In the VA Medical Center, West Haven, Sept. 8, 2002, Michael Joseph Phelan, 97, husband of the late Marion Smith Phelan of 143 New Rd., Hamden, father of Sheila Coyle and her husband, Dennis of Hamden, grandfather of Dennis Coyle, Jr., Kevin Coyle and Kristen Pitts, great-grandfather of Shaun Pitts, Jr., also survived by many nieces and nephews, predeceased by a son, Richard J. Phelan and 3 sisters and 5 brothers. Born in County Cork, Ireland, Oct. 19, 1904, a son of James and Mary Casey Phelan. He served in Hawaii during WW II in the U.S. Army. He retired in 1970 as golf supervisor at the New Haven Country Club 40 years employment. Funeral from BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden, Thurs., Sept. 12 at 9:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church at 10 a.m. Burial with Military Honors at St. Mary Cemetery. Friends may call Wed. from 5 - 8 p.m.
