Obituary

Miriam Eloise Nye Newcomb, 86, died Sunday, July 9, 2006 of complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The daughter of George Olin and Ethel Frost Nye, she was born on June 6, 1920 in her family home in North Haven, and died in the same home. Her house was built by her grandfather, Clarence N. Frost, on land deeded to the Frost family by King George III in 1769. Miriam Newcomb was a 1938 graduate of Lasell Junior College in Auburndale MA. She worked briefly for Southern New England Telephone Company. For 30 years she worked as assistant sales manager and executive secretary to the president and vice-president of Advanced Products Company of North Haven. She was married to the late Stanley Stowell Newcomb, DVM, who died in 1979. In addition to her long residence in North Haven, she resided in Glencoe IL, Gary IN, Hutchinson KS and Brookfield MA. Miriam Newcomb was a member of North Haven Congregational Church for 75 years, and was a deacon and choir member. She also was a member of the Mayflower Society and a long-time member of the North Haven Historical Society. Mrs. Newcomb is survived by her sister, Geraldine Frei of Hamden CT, and three children: Betsy and David Evans of Estes Park CO, Rae and Ronald Iverson of Cave Creek AZ, and Priscilla Newcomb of Winsted CT. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Judy and Adam Bennett of Ft Collins CO, Christopher and Leigh Ann Evans of Amherst NH, LCdr William and Molly Evans of Fallon NV, Andrew and Kim Iverson of Aurora CO, Geoffrey Iverson of Fremont CA, Rachel and Aaron Bosch-Bird of Plymouth MI, and Sarah and Christopher Hyson of Philadelphia PA. Additionally, she is survived by six great-grandchildren: W. Sidley and Vivian Bennett, Aislinn and Lindsay Evans, Kendrick Iverson and Samantha Bosch-Bird. A memorial service and reception will take place at North Haven Congregational Church on Monday, July 17 at 1:30 pm. Beecher and Bennett, 2300 Whitney Avenue, Hamden is in care of arrangements. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The American Lung Association of Connecticut, 45 Ash Street, East Hartford CT 06108-3272, to support smoking cessation and lung disease research.
