Nancy Brown

Nancy died peacefully surrounded by her family on August 18th, 2026. She put up a courageous fight against cancer.

Nancy was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania on November 30, 1942. She was the daughter of the late George Campbell, and Jeane Campbell. When Nancy was a toddler the family moved to the nearby suburb of Clarks Summit. They then lived briefly in Maryland and during Nancy’s grade school years, in Falls Church, Virginia. She has one sister, Connie (now Connie Redman of Columbus, Ohio). The family moved to Columbus, Ohio when Nancy was 12 because of her father’s job; she attended Upper Arlington High School, graduating in 1960. Nancy then attended Vassar College, where she majored in Political Science. She graduated in 1964.

Shortly after college graduation Nancy married Thomas Allen Brown, whom she had met while they were students. They had two children, Elizabeth Yorulmaz (Osman) and Ian Brown. She and Thomas Brown divorced in 1979. Nancy met Albert “Skip” Weldon at a 12-Step meeting in 1982 and the two became a couple. They married in 1990. Nancy was lucky to have two daughters added to her family, Sandra Germain (Eric) and Susan Weldon. She adored her 6 grandchildren, Alev, Sloan, Oscar, Miranda, Mackenzie and Madison.

Nancy worked briefly in social service positions before having children and then returned to the workforce in 1970. She worked in health planning agencies and in 1980 changed her career pathway to substance abuse treatment. Until 2000 she worked in that field, which she found rewarding because she was able to use her life experience. Nancy enjoyed being a student and attended Southern Connecticut State University, earning an MS in Urban Studies in 1976 and an MS in Counseling in 1991. She was a licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor and Certified Employee Assistance Professional.

In 2000 Nancy retired and thereafter enjoyed her grandchildren, establishing a second home in Mexico, and volunteer activities. For 26 years she was an ESOL tutor for Literacy Volunteers. She was an active member of the Unitarian Society of New Haven and chaired its Immigration and Refugee Task Force for several years.

Nancy truly enjoyed being with her family. She doted on her grandchildren. She attended numerous concerts, recitals, plays and graduations to celebrate them. She had a fun and active social life with her friends from many different walks of life. She was a writer and an editor. She was a strong advocate for human rights and became a notary late in life in order to help those who were being persecuted due to their place of birth. Nancy found friendship and spiritual sustenance in her self-help group and at the Unitarian Society of New Haven. She was loving and generous, and lived life to the fullest.

Friends are invited to join her family on Saturday, September 19th at 3:00 p.m. for a celebration of Nancy’s life at the Unitarian Society of New Haven, 700 Hartford Tpke., Hamden.
