Nicholas F. Bauer, Sr.

February 25, 1938 — May 12, 2026

Hamden, CT

Nicholas Francis Bauer, Sr., of Hamden, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2026 with family by his side. He was the beloved husband of 66 years to Denise O’Connor Bauer. Nick was born in New Haven on February 25, 1938 to the late Carl and Vera Meany Bauer.

Growing up in Fair Haven, Nick attended Saint Francis School, where he met the love of his life. After graduating from Notre Dame High School in 1956, he went on to attend Fairfield University, earning a degree in English and Social Studies with minors in Education and Philosophy. He later earned a Master’s degree in English from Southern Connecticut State University and completed his formal education at University of Connecticut, where he studied Secondary Administration and Curriculum.

Nick proudly served in the United States Marine Corps and was honorably discharged in 1962. In 1960, he began a distinguished 34-year career with North Branford Public Schools. He started as an English teacher and eventually retired as Principal of North Branford Intermediate School. Retirement, however, did not slow him down. He went on to work in the education programs at Southern Connecticut State University and Quinnipiac University, where he mentored and inspired future teachers into his 80s.

He was an active member of the Connecticut Association of Schools, served for more than 10 years on the Hamden Board of Education, and also served on the Board of Directors for both Notre Dame High School and the Martha's Vineyard Camp Meeting Association. He was also a lifelong member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, an organization that reflected his deep commitment to community and fellowship.

Nick enjoyed golfing, spending time on Martha’s Vineyard, and was both a ferocious reader and lifelong learner. He was an incredibly skilled handyman who could fix or build just about anything. He also loved watching sporting events, whether from the stands or at home on television. Above all, however, his greatest joy came from attending any event involving his grandchildren.

Besides his wife, Nick will be lovingly remembered by his children, Nicholas (Heidi) Bauer, Jr., Eric (Pam) Bauer, Amy (Ron) Delfini, and Jennifer (Mark Tolla) Bauer; his grandchildren, Meghan, Amanda, Jessica, Hayley, Alex, Kyle, Mitchell, and Cassie; great-grandchildren, Collin, Ronan, and Eloise; his sister, Carol Caro, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law and best friend, John “Jack” Ambrogio, and sister-in-law, Maureen Ambrogio.

Friends may visit with his family on Tuesday, May 19th from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Beecher & Bennett Funeral Home, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 2819 Whitney Ave., Hamden followed by his burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
