Brown, Ph.D
June 28, 1936 – June 3, 2021
Pearl L. Brown, Ph.D passed away at the age of 84 in her home in Bethany, CT on June 3, 2021, with family at her side. She is survived by her husband Bill Brown, to whom she was married for 60 years, her brother Carroll Leblanc, her sons Daniel and Eric, and four grandchildren. Pearl was an English Professor Emerita at Quinnipiac University, where she taught for more than 40 years. She graduated from Southwestern Louisiana State College in Lafayette, Louisiana and earned her Ph.D in English from the University of Arkansas. Pearl was an enthusiastic professor and a caring and compassionate teacher. She taught English composition and created and taught courses in Victorian literature, Southern literature, Women's literature, Minority Women's literature and Women in Psychology and Literature. She was part of the first English Department at Quinnipiac College. Her jovial personality, and her passion for her subject and for teaching endeared her to her students and faculty peers. She was awarded the Outstanding Faculty Award in 2003. Pearl was an active scholar and researcher, writing primarily in the areas of Victorian literature and literature by women. She researched the works of Charlotte Bronte and Elizabeth Gaskell, and issues of women and marriage in Victorian literature. She was a mentor and role model for younger women faculty in Liberal Arts. Born and raised in the Cajun country of Southern Louisiana, and then ultimately transplanted into New England, Pearl offered a unique perspective and experience to the world and was a woman ahead of her time. She had a profound influence on the many people whom she befriended and whom she taught. Pearl loved to travel and enjoyed her wine. Pearl was a wonderful wife and mother, and an intelligent, thoughtful, fun-loving, beautiful person. Thank you Pearl for everything you have contributed!
A memorial service will be held on July 7th at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 81 Center Rd., Woodbridge, CT. Friends may visit with Pearl's family in church from 10:00-11:00 a.m. prior to the service at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow. Memorial donations in Pearl's name can be made to either the
National Organization for Women (NOW)

Council for the Development of French in Louisiana (CODOFIL)
, or the
Clark Memorial Library
