North Haven- Philip C. Surh, 82, husband of Mija Kim Surh of 1178 Hartford Tpke. passed away April 5, 2004 in Yale New Haven Hospital. He was born in Back Koe, China, Feb. 10, 1922 a son of the late Byung Kyu Surh and Hannah Kim Surh and graduated from Waseda University of Tokyo. During the Korean War he was a volunteer with the U.S. Marines as a 2nd lieutenant with General Smith. He was a professor of the Korean language at Yale University from 1960 -1966, and then became a biomedical engineer at Yale New Haven Hospital for 40 years. During that time he was a pioneer designer of a blood separating centerfuge and he invented the first automated blood test in the U.S. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Young Min Surh Jahan and her husband, Eric Jahan of Winchester, MA, two sons, Kenneth K. Surh and Nicholas H. Surh both of North Haven, 2 sisters, Anna S. Chesnutt of Flagler Beach, FL, Susie Lee of San Francisco, CA, 2 brothers, Harold Surh of Las Vegas, NV, and Erold Surh of San Francisco, CA, and 2 grandchildren, Calen & Soreen Jahan. He was predeceased by 2 sisters, Hannah & Olga Surh, and 3 brothers, John, William & Peter Surh. Funeral service Thursday, April 8, at 10 a.m. at BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 WHITNEY AVE., HAMDEN. Friends may call Wednesday (TODAY) from 6-8 p.m. A Prayer service will be at 8 p.m. Burial in Oak Grove Cemetery.
