November 19, 1935 – March 30, 2022
Robert Coleman Child, III, 86, of Mowry St., North Haven, husband of the late Joan Reiter Child passed away March 30, 2022 at CT Hospice after a brief illness.
He was born in Boston, MA, a son of the late Robert C., Jr. and Alice Murphy Child, and had resided in North Haven since 1965. He graduated from Yale University with a BA Degree in German and was employed at the New Haven Register, the Journal-Courier, and later with the Associated Press as the sole staff photographer for the State of CT, retiring in 2009 after 50 years in the business. Robert was a member of the Governor's 2nd Co. Foot Guard and played in the band. He also was a member of the Branford Town Band and a parishioner of Trinity Lutheran Church, New Haven.
He is survived by his children and their spouses; Sara C. (Randy) Stevens of Old Lyme, Robert C. (Patricia) Child, IV of East Haven, and Emily C. (Charles) Smith of York, PA.
Loving grandfather of Christopher R. Bushy, Ethan F. Bushy, Brittany A. Schmaling, Nicholas R. Child, Benjamin M. Smith, Alexandra M. Smith, Jacob A. Smith and Zachary C. Smith. Beloved great-grandfather of Jackson W. Schmaling, Madelyne G. Schmaling, Declan R. Child, Connor R. Child, and Delany W. Smith. Robert was predeceased by his brother, Patrick R. Child.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service on Saturday, April 23rd at 10:00 a.m. in Trinity Lutheran Church, 292 Orange St., New Haven. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Amyloidosis Foundation, 7151 N. Main St. Suite 2, Clarkston, MI 48346, or given online at
