Obituary

Rosemary Margaret Addison McCarthy of Hamden passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on March 31, 2025. Born in London, Ontario, Canada on November 21, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Wilfred and Margaret (Deveney) Addison. The sole daughter of in a family of seven siblings, she was predeceased by her brothers and their wives, Norman (Virginia), Donald (Anne), William (Noreen), John (Lorraine), Frank (Viola), and James (Sandra).

Rosemary graduated from Westervelt College in London, Ontario, Canada with executive secretarial training. She emigrated to the United States through Detroit, Michigan. She took great pride in her career as an executive secretary in the upper echelons of Ford Motor Company. While in Detroit, she was set up on a blind date with a dapper businessman from West Hartford, Connecticut. They were married in New Orleans, Louisiana in a Roman Catholic ceremony during Mardi Gras in 1960. They settled in Connecticut and raised three children, who were brought up with great love and care in Hamden. Rosemary was predeceased by her son Paul Francis in 1971 and her beloved husband Paul Vincent McCarthy in 1979. She was also predeceased by her husband's brothers and their wives, John (Gloria) and Edward (Ruth).

Rosemary cherished her deep faith and was a daily parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Hamden, leading the rosary for many years. She was civically minded and volunteered at many organizations in the Town of Hamden, handling public relations. She worked at Quinnipiac College and the Overseas Ministries Study Center in New Haven later in her career.

Rosemary is survived by her daughters, Sheila McCarthy Quarz and her husband Robert Quarz of Cheshire and Marianne McCarthy of North Haven; her son, Brian McCarthy of Hamden; grandchildren, Paul Wilson-McCarthy, Martha Wilson-McCarthy, Erica Quarz Bell and her husband Paul Bell, and Morgan Quarz, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the exemplary staff at both Yale Hospice and Montowese Rehabilitation Center, with special thanks to Glen and Angelita at Montowese and Donna from Yale Hospice. All provided genuine care and comfort to Rosemary throughout her final journey.

Friends may visit with her family on Saturday, April 5th from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Beecher & Bennett Funeral Home, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden prior to her Mass of Christian Burial, which will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul VI Parish/Our Lady of Mt.
