Shirley Viola King, 94, of Hamden, widow of George King, died on Saturday, July 29, 2023 at Benchmark in Hamden.
Shirley was born in New Britain on December 2, 1928 and was a daughter of the late Arthur and Amanda (Yeski) Hinkel. She was raised in New Britain and was a graduate of Grace Memorial Nursing School in New Haven. She was a longtime Woodbridge resident, and was a nurse at Masonic and then with Dr. Riley before retiring.
Throughout her life, she enjoyed staying active and was a very involved member of Trinity Lutheran Church, New Haven. At home, she loved to feed the birds and would watch them at the feeders in the window. She was a creative person who loved attending painting and ceramics classes at the North Haven Senior Center. She enjoyed hosting Bible study, and getting together or going out to eat with her church and nursing friends and family.
Shirley is survived by her niece, Nancy Witkoski of Woodbury; several nieces and nephews; and her adopted family, The Shangs. She was predeceased by her siblings, Emily Hinkel, Aurelia Litke, Ruth Barnes, George Hinkel, Arthur Hinkel, Amanda Ziembko, and Lillian Turse.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 5, 2023 at 9:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 292 Orange St., New Haven. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, New Haven.
