Stella Barnes Johnson of Hamden passed away on October 19, 2010. She was born in New York City on October 27, 1933, daughter of the late Emma-Louise Warner and William Furman. She was later legally adopted by Joel Barnes of Wallingford. A graduate of Wheelock College in Boston, she taught public school in New Jersey, in Hamden and in Wallingford, CT. She was also a New Haven School Volunteer teaching English to second language learners. Ms. Johnson was an active antiques dealer for many years and professionally managed estate sales under the name of Another Stellar Sale. She served on the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross South Central Connecticut Chapter, the New Haven Colony Historical Society, the Hamden Historical Society and the Giant Valley Association of Antiques Dealers. She was also a member of the North Haven Lions Club. Ms. Johnson is survived by three children, James S. Johnson III and his wife Marion, Elizabeth W. Johnson and Douglas C. Johnson and his wife Mary; three grandchildren, Melissa Laine and her husband Yaakov, Ezra Johnson and Molly Johnson; three great-grandchildren, Esti, Dovi and Shira Laine; three sisters, Mary Hunt Kahlenberg, Nancy Barnes and Eleanor Friedman; nephew Joel Raymond and nieces Courtney and Lindsey. Friends and relatives may visit with her family on Sunday, October 24th at Beecher & Bennett Funeral Home, 2300 Whitney Ave, Hamden from 1:00 to 5:00 pm. A graveside service will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
