Obituary

Mr. Sung-Un Chang, a longtime resident of North Haven, passed away Monday, September 15, 2003 at South County Hospital in Wakefield, Rhode Island. He was born to Nak-do and Kuan-myong Chang on February 19, 1918. After receiving his bachelor's degree from Do-shi-sha University in Kyoto, Japan, he attended the University of Michigan, and then attended and received his M.A. in English literature from Yale University. He married Pauline Wuai Kimm in 1952. Mr. Chang was a lecturer at the Institute for East Asian Studies at Yale University, and co-authored, with S. L. Martin and Y.H.Lee, ''A Korean English Dictionary''. He also wrote the successful ''Gateway to English'' series of textbooks and ''A Dictionary of English Usage'' for Korean students. His other publications include the books, ''Korean Newspaper Readings'' and ''Readings in Contemporary Korean''. He is survived by his brother and sister, Choo-Un Chang of Chevy Chase, Maryland and Young-Sook Lee of Seoul, Korea. He has a daughter Suknan Sylvia Chang of Oakland, California, a son Keunsuk Paul Chang and two granddaughters, Sophie and Pauline, of North Kingstown, Rhode Island. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 3, 2003 at BEECHER & BENNETT, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden.
