Winfield Russell Jacobs, 81, of 2 Seymour Road, Woodbridge, died peacefullyat home on November 12. His wife, Roberta Brooks Jacobs, survives him. A civil engineer and land surveyor with Philip W. Genovese and Associates for over 30 years, he was instrumental in the design of numerous significant projects in the region including Route 80 improvements in East Haven, enhancements to the Chapel Square Theater District in New Haven, and erosion abatement programs at Jones Beach on Long Island. His career was marked by both his unique abilities and dedication, earning the respect of his colleagues. His life was enriched by his love of family, both present and past. Together with his wife, he raised two sons to adulthood, both of whom survive. They are Thomas Winfield Jacobs of Woodbridge and Charles Frederick Jacobs and his wife Kristin Malmisur Jacobs and their son Ian Michael of Coventry. A skilled genealogist, he and his late sister, Gladys Rose Jacobs, of Wooster, Ohio, traced their family history to Eighteenth Century England. Their research also revealed veterans of the Revolutionary and Civil Wars and earned the family membership in The Society of Civil War Families of Ohio. A devoted husband and loving father and grandfather, he leaves this legacy to future generations. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, he is predeceased by his parents, Beatrice Annie Tate and Edward Winfield Jacobs, a master carpenter. He dutifully served his country as a Technical Staff Sergeant in the Signal Corps of the Army Air Force during World War II. Stationed in Kunming, China, he repaired radio equipment used in combat aircraft. After the War, he attended Western Reserve University in Cleveland, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy in 1952. He briefly attended Yale University as a doctoral student in the Philosophy Department before beginning his engineering career .
